Often considered the county's chief executive
officer, a County Judge has broad judicial and
administrative powers, presiding officer of the
county's policy - making body.
As Justice of the Peace for precinct one for 16
years, Judge Middents served in the county seat of
government for Grayson County. This provided
him with first hand knowledge and insight of how our
county government works.
The County Judge must be well informed in the laws.
Judge Middents took every opportunity available to
him to be "well informed" by taking continuing
judicial education offered by the state of Texas as
well as other educational opportunities. Greg
continues his educational journey and in 2009 he
earned a graduate degree in Organizational
Leadership from the University of Denver.
While responsibilities vary from county to county, a
County Judge must consider criminal, civil, probate,
juvenile and mental competency matters.
Judge Middents presided over criminal and civil
trials. He was the first Judge in our county to
actively address the problem of students "skipping
school." By making students and their parents
accountable for their actions, this truancy program
was successful and vastly improved students' lives
by expecting them to earn and education.
At the county level, he was the Chief Jail
Magistrate for the county jail. He read the Miranda
rights to the accused, set their bonds, and made
sure their legal rights were protected.
The County Judge is a voting member of the
Commissioner's Court and works with the other four
members of the court to approve county budget and
and exercising administrative authority over county
government operations.
Judge Middents is conservative in managing budgets,
revenues and resources. He implemented certain
procedures necessary to make the court more
efficient and accessible to the public. He
established a "night court" where citizens could
take care of court business without jeopardizing
their jobs.
The County Judge serves on the juvenile board of
directors for the county.
Middents was instrumental and innovative in his
leadership in addressing juvenile issues in Grayson
County while serving as Justice of the Peace. He was
recognized both locally and statewide for his
actions in dealing who students who "skipped
school." Former Texas Governors Ann Richards and
George W. Bush, along with the Texas State Attorney
General recognizing him for his outstanding efforts
in dealing with the juvenile delinquency issues.
The County Judge performs a wide range of other
administrative duties. One such duty is to serve as
the county's Emergency Management Director.
While in office, Judge Middents had to deal with
1,000's of tragic accidents and deaths including two
of the worst automobile accidents in the state of
Texas and this nation. One accident killed 10
people, and the other was a bus accident that killed
17 people. He worked with local, state and national
disaster response teams in dealing with these two
tragic accidents.
He has worked effectively with law enforcement
officers, emergency services, fire departments and
hospitals. As a committed public servant, Judge
Middents has been "Battle tested and is already
prepared."
